IP Camera Not Connecting to WiFi

Troubleshoot a wireless IP camera that cannot join Wi-Fi, keeps going offline, or works by Ethernet but fails when you remove the cable.

Start here: Put the camera close to the router, confirm the Wi-Fi password, and check the camera's supported wireless band and security mode. If the camera has Ethernet, test it by cable first. That separates a Wi-Fi problem from a general camera, password or network problem.

1. Test whether the camera works by Ethernet

If the camera has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router or switch and see whether it becomes reachable. A working wired connection tells you several useful things: the camera is powered, the camera can join the LAN, your login is probably correct, and the remaining problem is specifically wireless configuration.

If it does not work by cable either, stop focusing on Wi-Fi. Check power, initialization, IP addressing, credentials and the camera's basic setup first.

2. Check whether the camera supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or both

Some Wi-Fi security cameras support only 2.4 GHz. Others support both 2.4 and 5 GHz. The router may combine both bands under one network name, which is convenient for phones but can confuse older or simpler IoT setup routines.

Check the exact camera model's specification. If it is 2.4-GHz-only, make sure 2.4 GHz is enabled on the access point. During initial setup, it can also help to temporarily use a clearly identifiable 2.4 GHz SSID if your router allows separate names.

Do not permanently disable modern Wi-Fi features for your whole network unless the camera actually requires it. First verify the device limitation.

3. Re-enter the Wi-Fi name and password

A single incorrect character can produce an unhelpful “connection failed” message. Re-enter the password rather than assuming the saved value is correct. Pay attention to:

If you recently changed the Wi-Fi password or SSID, the camera will normally need to be configured again with the new information.

4. Check Wi-Fi security compatibility

Routers increasingly support WPA3, while older cameras may support only WPA2 or older combinations. A WPA3-only network can therefore reject a camera that worked with an earlier router.

Use the strongest security mode the camera and router both support. The FTC recommends securing home networks with WPA3 or WPA2, keeping router software updated and using strong passwords. See FTC guidance for securing home security cameras.

Avoid weakening the entire network to an obsolete security mode just to keep an unsupported device alive. If a camera cannot operate with a reasonably secure current configuration and no firmware update fixes that, replacement may be the safer choice.

5. Move the camera closer to the router

Initial configuration should be done with a strong signal. Walls, metal doors, foil-backed insulation, appliances, crowded channels and outdoor distance can all reduce Wi-Fi reliability.

If the camera connects near the router but fails in its intended location, the setup is complete but the radio link is not good enough. Possible fixes include repositioning the access point, adding properly designed Wi-Fi coverage, using Ethernet, or using a PoE camera where cabling is practical.

For surveillance, a marginal connection is worse than a phone occasionally switching networks because dropped packets can become missing video at exactly the wrong moment.

6. Check guest Wi-Fi, client isolation and DHCP

A camera can appear “online” in an app yet remain invisible to a Windows recorder if the router blocks local-device communication. Common causes include:

If your goal is local recording in Security Eye, the PC must be able to reach the camera's local stream. A cloud app working on the phone does not prove local third-party access is allowed.

7. Confirm that the camera received an IP address

After the camera claims to be connected, open the router's client list. If the camera never receives a local IP address, focus on Wi-Fi authentication and DHCP. If it has an address but the PC cannot reach it, focus on isolation, firewall or subnet routing.

8. Reboot the camera and router deliberately

Do not repeatedly power-cycle everything at random. First save any configuration, then restart the camera. If the router has been running for a long time or recently changed settings, restart it separately and wait until Wi-Fi is fully available before rebooting the camera.

This makes it easier to tell which action changed the result.

9. Update firmware, then reset only if necessary

Check the camera manufacturer's official support page for firmware updates that mention Wi-Fi compatibility, security or stability. Follow the manufacturer's update instructions; interrupted firmware updates can damage devices.

If configuration is corrupted or the camera was previously paired with another network, a factory reset can be appropriate. A reset removes settings, so document any important configuration first and be prepared to initialize the camera again with a new administrator password.

10. If Wi-Fi works but Security Eye cannot see the camera

Once the camera has a stable local address, test it from the same Windows PC. Then open Security Eye and use Add Camera. If automatic discovery does not list it, choose manual setup and use the camera's documented network/stream information.

Automatic discovery may fail even while a direct stream works. That is why the correct troubleshooting order is: Wi-Fi association → local IP address → local reachability → camera login → stream compatibility → surveillance-software setup.
