How Long Do Security Cameras Keep Footage?

Where your security-camera recordings are stored affects much more than disk space. It changes how the system behaves during an Internet outage, who controls the footage, how much upstream bandwidth you need, how easy it is to access recordings from elsewhere, and what happens if the recording computer is damaged or stolen.
There is no universal winner. Local recording and cloud recording solve different problems, and some systems use both.

Security Eye records video and snapshots to a folder on the Windows computer. The destination can be changed in the program settings. This gives you direct control over the drive, folder, retention workflow, and any backup process you choose to add.
Local recording is especially attractive when the cameras and computer are on the same property. If the Internet connection goes down but the local network, cameras, PC, and power remain available, the camera streams do not need to leave the building just to be recorded.
The footage is on hardware you manage. You choose the drive, who can access the Windows computer, how long recordings are kept, and whether important clips are copied elsewhere.
A local camera can continue sending video across the LAN even if the Internet service is unavailable. That can be valuable in locations with limited or unreliable upstream connectivity.
Local video still consumes bandwidth on your LAN, but it does not need to upload every stream to an external service. This matters because many Internet connections have much lower upload speed than download speed.
With local storage, increasing retention usually means adding disk capacity rather than moving to a higher monthly cloud plan. The tradeoff is that you are responsible for the hardware, maintenance, and backup strategy.
Local storage is not automatically a backup. If the recording PC and its drive are stolen, damaged by fire or water, encrypted by malware, or simply fail, recordings stored only there may be lost.
If particular footage is important, copy it to a second device or an off-site location. The backup does not need to contain every ordinary recording; some users keep routine footage locally and separately protect only important events.
The strongest cloud advantage is location. If footage successfully reaches the provider, the copy is not physically inside the monitored building. That can protect evidence when local equipment is damaged or removed.
Cloud camera platforms are usually designed around account-based remote access. That can reduce the amount of router configuration an owner needs to manage.
You do not need to choose disks, monitor drive health, or build your own off-site replication system. In exchange, you depend on the provider's availability, policies, and pricing.
Cloud storage adds dependencies. Continuous or frequent uploads need adequate upstream bandwidth. An Internet outage can interrupt off-site recording unless the camera or service has a local buffer. Long retention and many cameras may increase recurring cost.
Privacy and account security also matter. Review whether streams and stored footage are encrypted, whether multi-factor authentication is available, where data is processed, how long it is retained, and how shared accounts or links are controlled.
Storage depends mainly on bitrate and recording time. As a rough planning rule, a camera averaging 1 Mbps continuously generates about 10.8 GB per day. A 2 Mbps stream is roughly 21.6 GB per day, and four 2 Mbps cameras recording continuously can approach 86 GB per day before filesystem overhead or bitrate variation.
Real usage can differ substantially because camera bitrates may vary with motion and scene complexity. Motion-triggered recording can reduce storage when the scene is quiet, while a busy environment may still produce long recordings.
Choose local-first recording when you want direct control, have a capable Windows PC and storage drive, want recording to continue without Internet access, or need to avoid uploading multiple camera streams continuously.
Choose cloud-first recording when off-site storage and simple remote account access matter more than recurring fees or upload dependence, and the service's privacy/security model meets your requirements.
Use a hybrid approach when routine footage can remain local but important events should also exist elsewhere. A hybrid design can reduce cloud bandwidth and cost while protecting the clips that would matter most after theft or physical damage.
